Auditions
Length
The music prepared for the audition must not exceed 25 minutes. Live auditions may be limited to 10 minutes, therefore although the auditionee must be prepared to perform all of the selections submitted on the application, he or she may be asked to stop before concluding a selection and there may be insufficient time to hear all of the selections.
Number and Type
All auditionees must be prepared to perform four selections: three classical compositions and one sacred arrangement. The three classical selections must be in contrasting style from literature widely esteemed to be genuine classical concert repertoire. The three classical selections must represent more than one style period. All prospective students are required to perform an arrangement of a doctrinally sound hymn or gospel song in a traditional and clearly conservative style.
Memorization
Instrumentalists must perform at least one selection by memory. Vocalists may perform one selection using the music - the other three must be memorized.
Additional Literature Requirements for Singers
Vocalists must sing in at least two foreign languages. One selection must be in English and this requirement may be satisfied by the hymn or gospel song arrangement. One selection must be either an oratorio aria written after 1720 or an opera aria written after 1765. All arias (oratorio or opera) must be sung in the original language and traditional key, and, if applicable, with any traditionally observed high note(s), and, also if applicable, with stylistically authentic cadenzas and/or embellishments.
Audition Recording in Lieu of Live Audition
Any student unable to make a live audition in Greenville, SC, USA, Saturday February 16, 2008, may submit a recording in lieu of a live audition. Audio-only recordings are not allowed. Recordings must be audio-visual and must show enough of the performer to help demonstrate the audio is not dubbed. There should be no doctoring of the sound. A wide variety of video formats are acceptable, however, the applicant must be advised that if the auditors cannot readily play the submitted video on equipment at hand, the audition may be discounted. Standard VHS, DVD and other standard video formats such as QuickTime movies, Windows Media format etc. using standard audio and video codecs on CD-Rom are acceptable. Length should not exceed 25 minutes.
Deadline and Submission
Applicants planning a live audition need to submit their application by Feb. 7, 2008 to insure the scheduling of their audition on Feb. 16, 2008. Applicants sending in video-recorded auditions should have the application submitted and video received by VSC by Feb. 16, 2008. Applications and video-recorded auditions received after Feb. 16, 2008 will be considered if particular positions are still unfilled at that time.
